Toward fairer global reward: Lessons from international non-governmental organizations

Global reward management plays a fundamental role in supporting the attraction, motivation and retention of employees, yet recent research has underscored limitations dominant balance sheet approach, including inequity between host country national expatriate staff. To shed light on how international contexts can be structured to address issues fairness equity, this study explores approaches global non-governmental organizations (INGOs), an underexplored context where may particularly salient. Through inductive 15 INGOs, we show are reconceptualizing systems by questioning assumptions workforce jobs they do, broadening consideration include both monetary non-monetary components. Doing so enables incremental shifts toward strategic alignment with underlying social values. Our findings provide important insights for operating internationally about concerns fairness, while still enabling meet their demands particular skills.
